The New Helmsley Multidisciplinary Oncology Center

The long-standing oncology institute at Shamir Medical Center, which for decades operated out of a small, outdated single-story structure built in the early 1980s, is now undergoing a complete transformation thanks to a generous donation from the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
The new and spacious Helmsley Multidisciplinary Oncology Center is currently under construction and is set to become the most advanced cancer treatment facility in the central region of Israel, offering world-class care to oncology patients in the area.

The existing 900 square meter facility will expand into a 9,750 square meter, six-story building. The new center will include an oncology emergency unit, a dedicated young adults’ day hospital, outpatient clinics, supportive care services, and multiple inpatient wards — all designed to provide a comprehensive and comfortable treatment environment for patients and their families.

The ground floor will serve as the main day hospital.

The two upper floors will house outpatient clinics and a state-of-the-art palliative care department.

The underground level will contain the hospital’s new radiation therapy institute.

This advanced, consolidated approach will allow patients to receive coordinated care under one roof, significantly reducing the physical and emotional stress often associated with cancer treatment. In addition to outstanding medical and nursing care, the new center will offer a broad range of holistic services, including psychological support, emotional counseling, and social assistance — all within a calming, welcoming, and modern facility.

Led by Dr. Raaya Leibowitz, the Helmsley Multidisciplinary Oncology Center will continue its close collaboration with other units within Shamir Medical Center, including inpatient and surgical oncology departments. It will also maintain strong partnerships with the adjacent Shmuel Harofe Geriatric Medical Center, community clinics of all four Israeli HMOs, and three external radiation centers, while continuing its robust research activity.

This center represents a key milestone in Shamir Medical Center’s vision and its long-term strategic development plan for the coming years.
