Sudden Cardiac Death in Healthy Young People: Why Does It Happen and How Can It Be Prevented?
Sudden cardiac death is one of the most urgent medical challenges in the Western world, accounting for 10–15% of all deaths. In the United States alone, approximately 380,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest — many of them without any prior history of heart disease. When the heart rate accelerates to 350–400 beats per minute, it loses its ability to contract effectively, leading to a rapid collapse of the circulatory system — and potentially death within minutes.
Prof. Elad Anter, a world-renowned expert in cardiac electrophysiology and Professor of Medicine at Harvard University, recently joined Shamir Medical Center. For over two decades, his research lab has led groundbreaking advances in the understanding of complex arrhythmias and has pioneered new treatment methods. His scientific achievements — including over 100 publications in top-tier medical journals — have earned him academic recognition from Harvard University and the Cleveland Clinic.
As a global authority, Prof. Anter has treated thousands of patients worldwide, including high-profile public figures, elite athletes, and artists. He is also an internationally recognized mentor, training physicians from around the globe in advanced electrophysiological techniques, and he serves on major international guideline committees.
Since returning to Israel in 2022, Prof. Anter has successfully treated dozens of highly complex cases — including patients whose lives were saved thanks to his unique expertise. He now leads the establishment of a world-class center for arrhythmia research and treatment at Shamir Medical Center.
The Vision: Two Central Missions
- Developing new technologies and methods for the early identification of individuals at risk of sudden cardiac death
- Conducting cutting-edge research to better understand the underlying mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias
A Call for Support
To realize this life-saving vision, we are seeking to establish a dedicated, state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Laboratory that meets international standards. This facility will serve as the foundation for Prof. Anter’s groundbreaking work and will enable the treatment and recovery of thousands of patients in need — in Israel and around the world.
