In 2016, the Government of Israel approved a major expansion plan for Shamir Medical Center, paving the way for it to become the largest hospital in the country. One of the flagship projects in this plan is the construction of a new fortified Emergency Department (ED), alongside three floors of fortified operating rooms and seven floors of inpatient wards.<\/p>\n
The new ED is the first stage of this national flagship project. Designed to be one of the largest emergency centers in Israel, it will include expanded trauma and emergency facilities, enabling us to treat a significantly higher number of patients \u2014 especially in times of crisis.<\/p>\n
Both the Emergency Department and the adjacent inpatient building have been carefully planned to enhance the patient experience throughout hospitalization and recovery. Special emphasis has been placed on innovation and international standards of design. The new facility will be fortified, allowing continuous operation during emergencies and wartime, including during missile attacks.<\/p>\n
The ED will be equipped with the most advanced medical technologies to dramatically improve patient safety, and will include:<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s first Step Down Unit (SDU) \u2014 an intermediate care unit for critically injured patients transitioning from intensive care.<\/p>\n
An expanded imaging unit, featuring the most up-to-date diagnostic technologies.<\/p>\n
A new psychiatric emergency unit.<\/p>\n
A new minor trauma unit.<\/p>\n
A specially designed layout based on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 including a dedicated ambulance bay and isolation units for infectious patients.<\/p>\n
An advanced medical simulation center for staff training and certification.<\/p>\n
Designated treatment zones for victims of chemical weapon attacks.<\/p>\n
Emergency inventory warehouses.<\/p>\n
An operational command center for real-time emergency management.<\/p>\n
